Instagram Reels and Stories safe zones: see what the app covers

Keep the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% on each side clear of text and logos. That one set of figures covers both Instagram Reels ads and Instagram Stories ads (Meta Ads Guide, 5 August 2026). It is a recommendation, not an upload gate, so nothing is rejected for breaking it.

Safe zone

The Instagram safe zone, and how firm it is

The same three figures cover Reels and Stories, and all three sit under Meta's “Design recommendations” heading rather than its technical requirements. The bands in the tool above are Meta's numbers; the interface around them is this mockup's drawing.

Instagram Reels ads: 14% top, 35% bottom, 6% each side

Meta states the figures twice for this placement, and the two sentences do not match in strength. The video page says “at least”, the image page says “roughly”:

Consider leaving at least 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% on each side of your asset free from text, logos or other important creative elements.

Consider leaving roughly 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% on each side of your asset free from text, logos or other key creative elements to avoid cropping key elements or covering them with the profile icon or call to action.

Only the image page names what does the covering: the profile icon and the call to action. Meta never says which element takes which part of the reserved 35%, so any component-by-component breakdown you find elsewhere was invented. The wording difference is one of the disagreements listed further down.

Instagram Stories ads: the same 14 / 35 / 6

The Stories video and image pages carry the identical sentence, in the “roughly” form quoted above. Two things to know about this placement: the Ads Guide slug is singular, instagram-story, and the plural form 404s; and Meta's Help Centre gives the same placement a different resolution to the Ads Guide, which is covered further down.

One extra rule, if your ad carries a disclaimer

Meta's dedicated safe-zone article carries no figure at all: it defines the concept and points at the “Safe zone guardrail” toggle in Ads Manager. It does add one rule that appears nowhere else:

If you're including disclaimers on your Reels ads, you should leave the bottom 40% of your ad free from text, logos and other key creative elements.

What happens on screens taller than 9:16

Most platforms stay silent on tall phone screens. Meta does not, and the answer affects whether your edges survive:

On devices with screens that are taller than the 9:16 aspect ratio, we may either zoom the creative to better fill the whole screen (which can crop areas outside the safe zone), or show the creative in its original 9:16 aspect ratio and use a black background to fill any extra space.

Instagram Feed: no published figure for 4:5 or 1:1

The tool renders Instagram Feed at 4:5 and 1:1. Meta publishes no safe-zone figure for those formats; its safe-zone page addresses Feed only for 9:16 video, which it points at the Reels guidance:

Note: 9:16 video ads in Instagram Feed use the same safe zone guidance as Reels and Stories.

These figures are for ads, not for organic posts

Instagram publishes no safe zone for organic Reels, and its Stories help article carries no dimensions, resolution, duration or safe zone at all. The 14 / 35 / 6 figures exist only in Meta's advertising documentation, and most third-party pages mix the two up. What Instagram does publish for organic is in the table below.

Reels and Stories share a safe zone and a resolution, then differ on file types, duration and text caps. Every row carries Meta's own classification, so you can see which figures are enforced and which are advice.

The Ads Guide slug is singular, instagram-story; the plural form 404s. Meta's Help Centre gives this placement a different resolution, 1080 x 1920 recommended with a 600 x 1067 minimum, and which one to build to is settled further down. See the conflicts

The difference in one line: ads recommend a single ratio (9:16) at 1440 x 2560, while organic accepts a range (1.91:1 to 9:16) and sets only floors (720 px, 30 FPS). Organic Reels get no safe-zone guidance at all.

What Meta does not publish for Instagram

Meta gives no figure for any of these. If a spec sheet hands you one, it did not come from Meta.

Which number to use

Two Instagram figures that depend on the page you read

Both of these sit between pages Meta publishes itself. Here is the number to build to, with the sources under it.

  • Instagram Stories resolution has three different Meta answers.

The Ads Guide figure, 1440 x 2560, is the placement page's own and matches every other Meta vertical placement checked.

    The sources, side by side
  • The same safe zone is "at least 14%" on one page and "roughly 14%" on the others.

The numbers agree everywhere; only the strength differs.

What to use

The Ads Guide figure, 1440 x 2560, is the placement page's own and matches every other Meta vertical placement checked. The 1080 x 1080 row is a minimum shared across placements, not a target. No Meta page reconciles the first two.

What to use

The numbers agree everywhere; only the strength differs. If you need one sentence to quote, use the image pages' wording: it is the only variant that names the covering elements, the profile icon and the call to action.

These figures are Instagram's, not Meta-wide. Facebook Stories carries two different bottom reserves, 20% on the video page and 35% on the image page, so the popular “Instagram reserves 35%, Facebook reserves 20%” line is wrong as stated: that 20% sits on exactly one Facebook page.
